Ask a question

This is the place to ask a question regarding fair trade and related issues. I will try and answer all questions, but if I do not know the answer I will refer your question to another expert in the field. So go ahead - what’s on your mind?

Annmarie :
My kids love ice cream - is any fair trade?
Hi Annmarie,

Ben & Jerry’s are the most socially responsible ice cream manufacturer, sourcing Fair Trade ingredients where possible. Look for the Fair Trade Certified logo on the following Ben & Jerry’s ice cream tubs:

Vanilla — made with Fair Trade Certified Vanilla extract.
Chocolate — made with Fair Trade Certified Cocoa Powder.
Coffee — “Coffee Heath Bar Crunch” and “CoffeeCoffeeBuzzBuzzBuzz” are both made with Fair Trade Certified coffee extract.

Yummy flavors and socially responsible - a winning solution!

Jodi :
Does fair trade really make a difference to the people in developing countries, or is it just clever marketing?
Hi Jodi, thank you for your question. This is an important issue as so many companies have jumped on the fair trade bandwagon, using clever marketing and images to pull our heartstrings and make us buy their products. Many products are described as “ethically produced” but there is often little or no foundation for this claim.

The only way to truly know if your purchase is making a real difference to the people producing it is to look for a fair trade label. The International Fair Trade Labeling Organization (FLO), and the US-based Transfair USA, conduct a comprehensive screening process before allowing the use of the label. All products must meet stringent conditions which ensure workers earn a livable wage, to ensure there is no exploitation of people or the environment.

Products that carry the Fairtrade Certification Mark guarantee that producers in the developing world get a better deal.
